This Valentine’s Day, Give the Gift of Peace of Mind

January 31, 2025 by Beth Burgee, Estate Planning Attorney

“Happy Valentines Day, Darling. Here’s an Estate Plan.” How very romantic. Aren’t those the words everyone wants to hear. Valentine’s day is here, and while you’re planning to shower your loved ones with chocolates, roses and maybe even a heart-shaped balloon or two, there’s another gift that could truly make their hearts flutter – an estate plan. Wait, wait! Don’t go away just yet. Hear me out. Sure, estate planning might not sound like the most romantic thing to talk about between bites of chocolate truffles, but stick with me. It might be the most thoughtful Valentine’s Day gift you can give your loved ones.

  1. Because Nothing Says “I Love You” Like Planning for the Future

    1. When you tell your partner, “I love you more than words can express,” what you really mean is, “I’m about to make sure your financial future is secure.” Estate planning is like that ultimate love letter – except instead of sappy poetry, you’re making sure your family and loves ones don’t end up in a never-ending battle over what to do with your prized collection  of vintage Star Wars memorabilia. It’s the gift of clarity and peace of mind – now THAT’S true love!
  • Powers of Attorney: Because Loves Means Knowing What to Do When You’re Incapacitated

    • Here’s a fun fact: Valentine’s Day is not the ideal time to discuss what happens with your estate if you’re in a coma. But it is the perfect time to make sure you already have something in place so your family can take care of you and your assets even when you’re in a coma or otherwise incapacitated. By setting up both financial and healthcare power of attorneys and designating people to act as your agents as opposed to your family ending up in a drawn out Guardianship case over who gets to make decisions for you.
  • The Gift of a Legacy: I’m Not Just Talking About Your ‘Killer’ Dance Moves

    • Estate planning is not just about what you leave behind in terms of material wealth – its about the legacy of your values and causes that matter to you. Your estate plan can include a charitable beneficiary for a cause that is close to your heart. Or maybe your leave money to your grandkids with the intention that they use it for education. Sure, leaving behind an epic collection of rocks is cool, but leaving a legacy of love, generosity, and make the world a better place? Now that’s the kind of love that lasts forever.
  • For My Anti-Valentine’s Day People

    • Maybe you are someone who absolutely loathes Valentines Day. Well, estate planning is here for you too. You can create a plan to make sure the people you don’t exactly have warm and fuzzy feelings for don’t inherit from your estate. See, something for everyone.

So this Valentine’s Day, don’t just give your loved ones chocolate, but also give them the gift of a well-thought out estate plan and the peace of mind that comes with it.

Please note that I am not suggesting a complete replacement of chocolate as that would be heinous. I am merely suggesting an estate plan in addition to the chocolate.

Testimonials

5 Stars

We initiated estate planning following a presentation by Sinclair Prosser Attorney Jon Gasior. We were so impressed, we contracted with them to complete our estate planning. Subsequently, we assembled information on our assets and Sinclair Prosser Gasior did the rest. Correspondence was communicated to our financial institutions and the estate was established. We were very pleased with the courteous manner of the Sinclair Prosser Gasior staff. However, it was their professionalism that made us satisfied we chose this firm to handle our estate. We have nothing but praise for Sinclair Prosser Gasior .
