A long-term relationship with your estate planning attorney is imperative for peace of mind for you and your family and for an estate plan that works. Estate planning is a life-long process which evolves as your life and the law both unfold.
Melissa’s Peace of Mind Story
Melissa and her husband, Joe, came into the law office for estate planning. They were a relatively young couple with two sons, ages 6 and 8.
After going through a complete analysis of their needs and goals, Melissa sighed a great sigh of relief and said, “If anything happens to Joe, I’ll just come to you.”
For Melissa, estate planning was all about peace of mind. She knew that all would be well because she and Joe had an individualized comprehensive estate plan in place. And she knew the planning that was done was backed up by her estate planning attorney and the attorney’s team.
Melissa and Joe chatted with their parents and siblings, encouraging them to do their own estate planning and telling them about their own plan. They asked specific loved ones if they would serve as trusted helpers (executor, trustees, power of attorney agents, and guardians for their two sons.)
Their family asked why Melissa and Joe had made certain decisions. Even though estate planning, finances, incapacity, and dying can be tough to talk about, Melissa and Joe started the conversation. Several family members expressed thanks and said that they felt much more comfortable knowing that Melissa and Joe had done estate planning.
Both sets of parents and two siblings came in for their own estate planning. Another sibling came to one of the law firm’s estate planning seminars and is discussing planning with his spouse.
When something such as disability or death occurs in this family, they are prepared. They know they have good estate plans in place and they know who they can count on to be there when they need them. This is why a long-term relationship with your estate planning attorney is so important: Peace of mind in knowing you have an estate plan that works and a law firm you can count on to be there for you when you need them.
